POLYWOOD: Development of new bio-sourced polyamides from wood derivatives entering pulp manufacturing units.
The results showed that it is possible to extract sugar juices from wood, while guaranteeing sufficient cellulose quality to make paper. Unique routes were developed to convert these sugars into bio-sourced monomers and then to obtain two new partially bio-sourced polyamides (over 50%). Other ways of upgrading were envisaged for the furniture sector. At the end of the project, 3 scientific publications were published, and 2 patents deposited.
In addition to the developed products (sugar juices, monomers, polymers) at laboratory and test project scales, the POLYWOOD project has validated the interest of a new economic model for French pulp mills by giving value to a co-product in a highly value-added market.
